The Red Tornado (Ma Hunkel) was one of the earliest cross-dressing superheroes. Although her success was more as parody than as a real crime fighter, The Red Tornado, in her long johns and helmet fashioned from a pot with holes cut out for eyes, successfully battled local gang members to protect neighborhood children. In her loose fitting outfit and helmet which obscured all facial features, it should be said that Ma Hunkel was more of an androgyne than a cross-dresser. She made her first appearance in All American Comics #3 and was created by Sheldon Mayer.
